The BALPURE system, which received Type Approval in July, has been selected for use on two bulk carriers being constructed by Sasaki Shipbuilding for Toko Kaiun Kaisha.
The Type-Approved BALPURE® ballast water treatment system from Severn Trent De Nora was selected for use on two new bulk carriers being constructed for Toko Kaiun Kaisha, Ltd. by Sasaki Shipbuilding at its shipyard in Osaki Kamishima, Japan. The two bulk carriers are the first new Japanese vessels to install the BALPURE system, which received Type Approval to International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations for ballast water in July.
Sasaki Shipbuilding purchased two skid-mounted BALPURE BP-500 systems for each of the 12,000 dwt bulk carriers. Each BALPURE system is capable of treating ballast water flow rates of up to 500m3/h. Installation has been completed on one of the two vessels which will be delivered to the operator Daiichi Chuo Kisen Kaisha on 7 October 2011.
The BALPURE system utilizes electrolytic disinfection technology and was chosen by Sasaki for its low power and maintenance requirements and simple operation. The system surpasses IMO D-2 standards with no adverse effects on the environment or the vessel’s ballast tanks.
BALPURE’s slip stream treatment approach, in which one percent of the total ballast water flow is used to generate the hypochlorite disinfection solution, enables remote mounting away from the main ballast line. BALPURE can be installed in the engine room or in auxiliary machinery spaces classified as safe areas. As a result, precious space in the pump room is not taken up and the expensive relocation of equipment is not required.
The slip stream treatment approach also allows for normal efficiency in low-salinity and low-temperature water quality environments.
